About the choice reaction time test
Choice reaction time measures how fast you can decide between multiple possible responses. An arrow appears in one of four directions — press the matching arrow key (or tap the matching on-screen button on mobile). Score is your average reaction time across 5 rounds. Errors add a penalty.
How it works
- 1Click Start. Wait for an arrow to appear on screen.
- 2Press the matching arrow key (↑ ↓ ← →) or tap the button.
- 35 rounds. Wrong keys add a 500 ms penalty.
- 4Your average time in milliseconds is the score. Lower is better.
Score benchmarks
How your score stacks up. Values are indicative averages, not clinical thresholds.
| Tier | Score |
|---|---|
| Elite | < 320 ms |
| Excellent | 320–380 ms |
| Average | 380–480 ms |
| Slow | 480 ms + |
Tips to improve
- Rest your fingers over the arrow keys before starting.
- Don't anticipate — accuracy first, speed second.
- Use a wired keyboard for the lowest input latency.
- Take breaks — cognitive fatigue slows choice reaction faster than simple reaction.
Frequently asked questions
How is choice reaction different from simple reaction?
Simple reaction has one stimulus and one response. Choice reaction adds a decision — you must recognize the stimulus AND choose the right response, roughly doubling the time.
What is a good choice reaction time?
350–450 ms is typical for adults. Under 320 ms is elite and usually seen in trained gamers or athletes.
Why do errors add a penalty?
A speed test with no accuracy penalty rewards mashing keys. The 500 ms penalty keeps the score meaningful.
